Report on Heaviest Cod and Heaviest bag fishing competition January 19th 2020

The first of competition of the year and what a brilliant sunny day and turn out!
A record of nine boats and boats and 15 fishermen went out on a sunny, but chilly day. Some newcomers to the competition scene were Owen, Nathan, Liam, Eddy, Bob, Judy and Dave Avebrook. Kaikoura took the club Hon Sec out; an experienced competitive sailor and freshwater (mostly) fisherman.
Some boats started off at opposite ends of the Solent; with most boats heading for the Bramble bank and Ryde Middle West areas. Paul H headed for the west of the Solent and Herbie to the east near stokes bay.
Weigh in was at 1600 hours. Most boats caught dogfish, congers, rays and whiting. However, at least two cod were caught and Dave Avebrook was a clear winner with a 4 lb 12 ounce cod, followed by John on Herbies boat with a 3 lb 8 ounce cod. So well done Dave for sticking it out on the bramble bank! Dave was awarded the £20 East Cowes Tackle voucher carried over from 2019 and will also be awarded the Cod Trophy for 2019/2020 kindly donated by Lee. This will be handed back at the end of September for the next Cod season.
The heaviest bag was taken by Paul H a total weight in excess of 15 lb. For the next competition involving the heaviest bag, we will clarify rules about the heaviest bag and apologies to those who were unclear of the rules.
The next competition will be for the biggest fish on Saturday April 11th, the same day as the fisherman’s supper in the evening.
Cheers Richard and Mike
